Lecturer: Mariya Tytarenko, PhD

Credits: 2 credits / 60 academic hours (16 classroom hours)

The course examines the field of creative nonfiction that paradoxically remains relatively unknown in Ukraine since it has not been taught within the curriculum of Ukrainian media studies. Nevertheless, there are numerous brilliant Ukrainian authors, who have not as yet been associated with New Journalism phenomenon that appeared in 1960th in the USA and was first theoretically founded by Tom Wolfe in 1973. The course focuses on great typological variety of the genre (specified by John Warnock), including: Literary Journalism, Autobiography and Biography, Writing about History and Literary Documentary, Travel Writing, Writing about Nature and Culture. Students will be encouraged, in each case, to examine those categories, discussing the most influential Ukrainian authors of the present day, their books, articles, and their writing styles. Special attention will be paid to such authors as Oksana Zabuzhko, Yuriy Andrukhovych, Maria Matios, Serhiy Zhadan, Iren Rozdobudko, Artem Chapay, Lesia Voronyna, Maksym Kidruk, Klara Gudzyk, Mary Mycio, Olena Suslova, and others.
